Matt is a nationally certified and state licensed acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist. He completed his Master’s of Science in Oriental Medicine in 2010, and completed his Bachelor’s of Arts here at UW Madison in 2001, in Linguistics and German. In 2012, he was invited to intern in Taipei at a private pain clinic, where he spent four months in weekly observation. Matt has completed advanced trainings in classical herbalism, qi gong (coordinated breath and body movement) and Chinese massage. Having grown up on a small Wisconsin farm, he has always had a deep connection to plants and herbal medicine, and appreciates the effect of diet, season and weather upon health.
Matt was drawn to Chinese medicine for the treatment of stress-related insomnia, fatigue and digestive complaints, following a prolonged period of overwork and burnout. Through classical herbal medicine, acupuncture and dietary changes, he was able to recover his health.
Matt is a general practitioner, and enjoys seeing a diverse population of varied complaints, including: musculoskeletal, hormonal, stress-related, digestive, skin conditions, chronic illness, respiratory and cardiovascular, etc.
Matt is also a Zen priest and trained as a monk in a classical Zen monastery from 2003 – 2007. Currently, he runs the Madison Rinzai Zen Center, and recently became a fully-recognized teacher and lineage holder, empowered to accept, ordain and train students.
